Apprentice Electrician Renewal: Keep Your Career Moving
Apprentice electrician renewal is a one-year cycle — complete 4 hours of CE, log into the TDLR portal, and you are done. Here is the full process.
What Your Apprentice Electrician Renewal Covers
A Texas Apprentice Electrician license lets you do electrical work on job sites. You must work under a licensed Journeyman or Master Electrician. You cannot work on your own.
Apprentice electrician renewal keeps your authorization active for one more year. If your license lapses, you cannot work on job sites until you fix it. Late renewals also cost more.
When Does Your License Expire?
Your renewal date is one year from your issue date. TDLR does not use the calendar year or your birthday. Check your current license card or log into TDLR MyLicense Office to find your exact date.
If you hold more than one active Texas electrician license, one 4-hour CE course covers all of them in the same renewal cycle. You do not pay per license.
Step 1: Complete Your 4-Hour Continuing Education Course
TDLR will not process your apprentice electrician renewal without a CE certificate. You must finish a 4-hour TDLR-approved course first. It is not optional.
The course covers Texas electrical code, TDLR rules, and safety. You can take it online at your own pace. When you finish, download your certificate. You will upload it when you renew.
Pick an Approved Provider
The course must be TDLR-approved for Texas electrician CE. Out-of-state courses do not count. Manufacturer training does not count. Confirm TDLR approval before you sign up.
Once you have your certificate, the 4-hour CE course step is done. Head to the portal next.
Step 2: Submit Your Renewal Through TDLR MyLicense Office
Submit your apprentice electrician renewal at tdlr.texas.gov. Log in with your TDLR account. The whole process is online.
What to Do in the Portal
Find your apprentice license and click Renew. Upload your CE certificate. Check that your name, address, and phone are current. Enter your card and submit.
TDLR takes Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. Payment processes right away. Download your renewed license the same day. Save it to your phone — you may need to show it on site.
Portal Won’t Let You Through?
Your CE certificate is the most common cause. It must show your full name, completion date, and TDLR approval number. Contact your CE provider if anything is missing.
What Comes Next: Upgrading to a Journeyman License
Your apprentice license is a stepping stone. Log your hours under a Journeyman or Master. Then sit for the TDLR Journeyman exam.
Pass the exam and you can work on your own. You can lead other apprentices. Your pay goes up. Keep your renewal record clean — gaps hurt your career.
The Texas Journeyman license renewal works the same way. Same $45 fee. Same 4-hour CE. Same TDLR portal. Stay current each year until you move up.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to renew a Texas apprentice electrician license?
$45 if renewed on time. Late fees are $67.50 if renewed within 90 days of expiration, or $90 if renewed between 91 days and 3 years after expiration. A 4-hour TDLR-approved CE course is also required — that cost is paid separately to the CE provider.
Can I do the CE course and renew on the same day?
Yes, as long as your CE provider issues the completion certificate immediately upon finishing the course. Complete the online CE course, download your certificate, then log into TDLR MyLicense Office and submit your renewal — all in one session.
What happens if my Texas apprentice license expires?
You cannot legally assist on electrical job sites while your license is expired. You can still renew — with a late fee — as long as the license has been expired less than 3 years. After 3 years, you must reapply as a new applicant.
Do I need a new 4-hour CE course every year?
Yes. TDLR requires a new 4-hour approved CE course each renewal cycle. Certificates from a previous year do not carry over.
Can I renew my apprentice license without a supervising electrician sponsoring me?
Yes. The renewal itself does not require employer or supervisor verification — just your CE certificate and the renewal fee. However, you must still work under a licensed Journeyman or Master to be on the job legally.
